Calvin was livid.

“You stupid asshat. You were supposed to hold on to her. How hard is it to hold on to a girl and scare her a little bit?”

Tigg bristled. He could feel his quills sticking out, but Calvin wouldn’t get close enough for them to be a threat. Calvin was the smart one, after all. “A normal girl isn’t hard. But I didn’t see you sticking around, either, when she started screaming.”

Calvin glowered at him. “You should have held on, anyway. Now Arundel has her, and what are we going to do about that?”

“Nothing?” He knew it wasn’t the right answer, or at least not the answer Calvin wanted to hear. But it was probably the truth, anyway. “The two of us can’t go up against their whole crew. Sylvia…”

“Screw Sylvia. Timora is mine, and we’re going to get her back.”

“You know, I still need…” Getting a word in edgewise with Calvin was hard enough on an ordinary day. Today, he got shut up with a gesture.

“Yeah, yeah. I know. Did you see anyone you liked today?”

“There was the tiny one. Ciara? She wasn’t out today, though.”

“Ciara? Isn’t Deus hunting her?”

“He doesn’t have her yet, though. Well, I mean, he didn’t.”

“He probably does now. Forget her.”

“Cody?”

“Barely looks like a girl. What, are you just listing off people?”

“No?” Tigg gave up. He’d known enough not to mention the one he really wanted, anyway. If Calvin knew Tigg wanted something, Calvin would take it.

“Man, you have no idea what you want. I’m going home to figure out how to fix this mess. You… I don’t know, do something.”

“Something.” He focused on his quills, getting them settled down again. “All right, something.”

“Try not to do anything stupid.”

“Weren’t we going to…” Calvin was already stomping off.

“Of course he wasn’t.” Nobody touched Tigg. His Keeper had only touched him with orders wrapped around him, after that first time. But there was a hand on his arm now. Right over his sharpest quills.
It was an effort not to bristle. Instead, he turned, slowly, to see who was touching him. “He wasn’t…?”

“Going to help you. Either he didn’t get what he wanted, in which case he was off to sulk.” Nessie cy’Akatil looked up at him. Eared up at him; with the lights back on, her sunglasses covered eyes that were nearly blind. “Or he got her, and then he’d be off in his room. Face it, Tigg, you were screwed either way. Or, rather, not screwed.” She smirked at him, and showed him her long pink tongue.

Tigg knew he wasn’t as swift as Calvin, but even he could tell something was a bit fishy here. “If your hunting had gone right, you wouldn’t be talking to me, either.”

“If I’d been hunting. Not everyone does on Hell Night, you know. Some people just play the spooks. Like you.”

“I was hunting.”

She patted his other arm. Her hands, webbed and long-fingered, looked really fragile. He could pin her hands to his arms without even trying. “I know you think you were. But tell me. If you were hunting, why did all you do is play thug for Calvin?”

“Well, we were going to… Oh.” Her expression could be read by a blind man. “Oh. We weren’t.”

“So tell me, spikes, who were you going to go after?”

Oh, no. Calvin always said, you don’t tell anyone what you want. They’ll only use it to get to you. On the other hand, she was touching him, both hands, her nose nearly to his chest.

“I’ll tell you if you’ll tell me.”

“Who I was hunting?” Her lips curled up. “It’ll have to wait, I guess.”

I know half the answer to that *grin* but I want to know the other half. *sigh*

I think Tigg needs new friends. He’d be less of a brute, I think. He definitely needs better quality friends.
